Getting Work in Media

GADIM does not currently have any programs for media training, but programs do exist for people with various disabilities who want to pursue a career in mass media.

Programs for Filmmakers

  • Disability Belongs™ Labs for Entertainment Professionals with Disabilities: a five-month program for disabled creatives working in development, production and/or post-production, and careers as writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, animators, and other production roles.
  • Easterseals Disability Film Challenge: any person or team with disabilities can make a short film during its weekend-long filmmaking contest. The Film Challenge “provides a platform for new voices to tell unique stories that showcase disability in its many forms. Challenge winners receive invaluable access to entertainment professionals, opening the door to an industry notoriously difficult to enter,” contest creators say.
  • Lights! Camera! Access! (LCA) Career Exploration Online Academy: a six-month training program for creatives with disabilities who want to pursue careers in media (TV, film, documentary, theatre, radio, news, journalism, animation, music, dance, digital, interactive – including video games, blogs, vlogs and podcasts) – in front of and behind the camera/keyboard

Programs for People with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities

Programs for Women

Women’s eNews selects two Fellows (one under 50 years of age; one over 50 years of age) who are aspiring journalists with disabilities who identify as female. Both Fellows write up to six articles ($500 for pitch; $500 when published, for a total of $1,000/article). They will be mentored by Women’s eNews Editor-in-Chief Lori Sokol.
